The winter learning journey: Day 1

Day 1: 100% PURE New Zealand

Well, the time has now come! School’s out for the holidays and your tour of New Zealand is about to begin. I hope that you are ready and excited! Curious Kiwi certainly is – he can’t wait to start the Great Kiwi Road Trip! Before you all hit the road, let’s take a minute to review some key facts about New Zealand.3.jpg

Activity 1:  Go to the Tourism New Zealand website and click on the ‘Facts - New Zealand People’ tab. Read about the people of New Zealand and then choose three interesting facts to post on your blog. The facts must be written in your own words. Do not simply copy and paste the facts from the website

Fact 1 :
In New Zealand the people are from many different cultures, this means that as Kiwis we love to share different cultural traditions through music, arts and food.
However, everyone still cheers for one rugby team..... ALL BLACKS.

Kiwis love the outdoors whether it's on the water, winning the AMERICA'S CUP, walking through the bush and climbing mountains. The best thing about doing all these things outside in New Zealand is there are no dangerous animals like snakes, scorpions, crocodiles or giant spiders that could kill you.

Kiwis will great you with "Kia Ora" (Welcome)
Maori is the native language in New Zealand and there are lots of streets and places with Maori names.
There are 4.4 million people in New Zealand and 1/3rd of them live right here in Auckland.

  1. Kia ora Patience and welcome to the Winter Learning Journey programme. We are SO excited that you have joined us this year!

We really hope that you will enjoy learning all about New Zealand and sharing your learning on your blog. I have already learned a lot from your first blog. In fact, I did not know that one-third of all New Zealanders like right here in Auckland. That is pretty amazing, isn't it?

I actually grew up in a very small town in Canada called Almonte that has a population of approximately 6000 people. Moving out of Almonte to a bigger city was a bit of a shock, the first time that I did it! I now love living in the big city because we have access to so many different things to see and do on a regular basis. I love going to the theatre and the symphony and we're able to go to both here in Auckland! We're also able to go for walks on the beach, hikes through the bush and swims in the ocean. How lucky are we?!

I hope that you will continue to blog with us over the coming week. The Winter Learning Journey programme is open until next Saturday so there is lots of time left to explore NZ.

    Let the journey begin!

    ~Rachel
